APPLICATIONS DUE FOR EARL VANDER MEULEN MEMORIAL AWARD

The Earl Vander Meulen Memorial Award will be presented for the first time on November 10, 2007 during Canada’s National Jersey show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Earl J. Vander Meulen was a successful and well-respected Jersey owner working with his family at Peninsula Farm near Stirling, Ontario. He was lost in a tragic farm accident in late July 2006.

A number of Earl’s close friends in the agricultural community decided that they wanted to honour the memory of this gifted and giving man by establishing a special award in his name. After much thought and discussion over the autumn and winter months they crafted a concept of what the award would be. Each year at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair one individual will receive this great honour.

The award will, in the words of its organizers: “Commemorate Earl’s strong character and recognize his legacy of caring for family, establishing life long friendships, embracing a strong faith and a loving agriculture and farming.  The recipient will exhibit all the above qualities as well as being of high integrity, displaying a positive, welcoming and open attitude and being a progressive leader who is involved in the dairy industry and other positive community organizations. Anyone involved in the dairy industry may apply or be nominated. An applicant need not be working with Jersey cattle.

Earl Vander Meulen was an exceptional community leader in a quiet and understated way. He did not seek personal glory. He wanted to see progress and growth and other people developing their God-given skills, especially young people. Earl treated everyone he met with equal respect and dignity and warmth no matter what their role or station in life. He exemplified the true concept of being a giver.
