New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association Inc
(trading as Jersey New Zealand)
The President of Jersey New Zealand, Brian Carter, announces on behalf of Council that Mr. John Allan steps down as CEO of Jersey New Zealand from February 8th 2008. In accepting Mr. Allan’s resignation, the council recognises the sterling work carried out by Mr. Allan over his 17 years with the Breed Society.
Over the last 12 years, in his capacity as CEO of Jersey New Zealand, Mr. Allan has been part of significant changes made by the Association and its members. He joined as Administration Manager and Association Secretary in 1991, a few years after the strategic move by the Association from Palmerston North to LIC at Newstead, Hamilton, where the National Database is located. Jersey New Zealand is a participating breed society in the Database and interfaces directly for its herd book and animal records.
Mr. Allan says that one particular highlight for him was to be part of the new animal evaluation development implemented in 1996, which saw the Jersey breed surge ahead. “Jerseys have stayed at the top for BW ever since,” he says, “because modern evaluations measure efficiency and profit and Jerseys are right up there”.
Of more recent times he has been very proud of the success rate from the Association’s progeny test scheme, Jersey Genes, a joint venture with AmBreed NZ. Many bulls have graduated including high flyers such as Okura Manhatten SJ3 ET who is in his fifth year at the top under widespread use.
“Genomic selection is the next exciting development for the breeding industry and is here now” says Mr. Allan, urging Jersey breeders to embrace it and keep the breed at the forefront of genetic gain “I believe it could be very easy to miss the boat on this one” he says. “Jersey New Zealand through its Jersey Genes joint venture with AmBreed will be part of this exciting technology going forward”
“Jersey New Zealand is about the great Jersey cow and her dedicated farmer custodians” he says. ” It has been an incredibly satisfying experience for me to be part of the Association’s achievements through this period of its history and to work with such a great group of dedicated people, but now it is the right time for me to move on.”
The Council and members sincerely thank Mr. Allan for his contribution to Jersey New Zealand and wish him every success for the future.
The new Jersey New Zealand staffing structure will be announced by Council at the end of February.
